My short-term roommate accidently bleached my off-white carpet. is she responsible for the $75 patching?

By

I decided to help out a friend of a friend by allowing her to move in with me, for 2 months, while she completes a medical rotation. I charged her a flat rate for both months (inc all utilities and furnishings)… but there was no lease or contract due to the short nature of her stay.

Last week, my she let my dog into her room, and apparently my dog proceeded to throw up on the carpet. She decided not to tell me, but take care of the incident herself, with a bathroom cleaner titled “Clorox Clean-up with Bleach.” I feel bad that it was my own dog that instigated this mishap… but I honestly believe the permanent staining could have EASILY been avoided, as I would have never made such a mistake.

My question is, is she responsible for the $75 estimate I got to repair (patch) the bleached carpet? I thought about paying half, but I still feel cheated even paying that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

From a monetary perspective you are at least half responsible. If your dog doesn’t do the damage, she never attempts to clean it up.

I would ask her to pay for it (as she was the person foolish enough to spray bleach on the carpet), but if she balks, I do not think $75 is worth losing a friend over.

Its just carpet ….

I think 50/50 would be the fair thing. it is your dog.. if she doesnt pay i it i would just eat the whole thing. its not worth loosing a friend over..
Legally you are responsible for getting it fixed and they you would have to sue her. In the U.S. it costs $125 to file a small claims. loser pays it. i really think it would depend on the mood of the judge. and it could end up costing your $200.

No good deed goes unpunished,

you did a good deed by allowing her to pay there for two months ~ ~ or so? Don’t turn it into a bad situation, if she didn’t offer to pay don’t ask but don’t let this stop you from doing good deeds in the future. 75 dollars is not the end of the world, stuff happens.
