Is My Boss Accountable for this?
ByI work in a salon. I have been there for about 6 months. I am paid commission only. When I was hired she did not have me sign a contract for booth rent, responsibilites, etc. She knew I was a new stylist with no clientele. Until recently about 2 weeks ago. I was going in every week for 5-6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Since I am new and have no clientele I did alot of cleaning, organizing, etc. I make approx $100/mo so as you can see I have no clientele. When she hired me I was told that she would help me build my clientele and advertise. We have done one ad in the local newspaper. I have passed out flyers, emailed clients who have not visited in quite some time, etc. I have no clientele to show for it (I realize the economy is in the crapper but for all my work I should have a few handfuls of clients). In the begining my boss really noticed how hard I worked, I mean I was coming in all day for free and cleaning, ordering, made up a salon email newsletter that we do monthly. She even promoted me to salon manager. There is 6 employees all together and stated that she doesn’t like to have certain responsiblities: ordering, organizing interviews, etc that she is busy with her clientele. She stated that once we moved out of our curren location (8months left on the lease) that she would give me commission on my services plus salary for being manager. This isn’t the first salon I have worked in but up until recently the best I have every worked for as far as atmosphere, coworkers, etc. About a 2-3 months in I noticed girls where using my stuff and not returning it (combs clips, etc). I kindly put up a note in the back saying if you wish to borrow something please ask me before, and return it the way it was taken (ex: clean, working condition, etc). Then one day I got into work and my scissors where chipped (beyond repair) and the next day my clippers had been dropped and they were broken. I made the owner aware and she apologized but did not offer anything up for it. Made her sister go out and buy clippers for everyone who didn’t have them and they were going to pay her back for them. I disregarded it because I can fix the clippers with a $75 part and the scissors where old but still workable and I had another pair (the scissor cost $150-$200). I then started taking stuff home. The only things I would leave beind was organizing stuff, products, and I have a container for my dirty combs and brushes-which had dirty combs, brushes, and clips. A few weeks later I noticed some of my dirty brushes missing and found them in other peoples stations and found my clips broken-I know all of these are mine because my name is on them. I also had left my flat iron there because we would go out after work and could not leave a hot flat iron in my case or car (would burn whatever it was placed on) I did these a few times without incident. I would take it home if the iron was cooled off. During this time I quit coming in as much because I was aggravated that my stuff and station was being used and not in the same condition as I had left it. Also I was starting to feel like I as being used for free this or that. Well I have been gone for a few weeks: holidays, got sick, and also was working a temporary job for extra cash. So I went in yesturday and wanted to talk to my boss about my situation (lack of clients, money, etc). When I got in there no one was there. I went to my station to take my stuff (combs, etc) basically clean it since it was dusty and take down some pictures and put new ones up from the holidays. When I went to my station my station was filthy! My hand mirror was missing, most of my dirty brushes or combs were gone, hair everywhere, my product was at other peoples stations…I grabbed my stuff for other’s sations then started packing up my pictures-that’s when I went to grab my flat iron. I opened the drawer and it was full of dirty capes and hair-and surprise surprise it was gone! needless to say i was ticked. I grabbed my stuff. looked for it high and low. went out to my car to make sure i didn’t already have it and i didn’t. so i went back in wrote a note on the book for my boss that we need to talk and then posted a note on the phone and in the dispense/break room that said: Hey Everyone stopped in to grab my old pics and to see how everyone’s holidays were! Sorry I missed you guys but I will see you on Thursday. If you borrowed my flat iron could you please return it by Thursday since I will need it this weekend to do my friends hair for her party? Thanks. Well I got a call from my boss (missed her call) but her voicemail said we could talk (didn’t sound different then she usually does) but then said no one borrowed it and no one has seen it! I am not the type of person to lie about this! I find money on the groundand I ask people around me if they dropped it, I don’t lie about this kind of stuff? when I talk to her about the other stuff I was going to give her a list of stuff that has been taken from me a

This is a tough situation, but clearly something needs to happen. Unfortunately with the economy the way it is, it’s not easy to change jobs even if your resume is good, so you may have to wait to make a career change. I don’t know how common it is for stylists to borrow each others stuff, but you should certainly get things back in good working order. Clearly, your coworkers are careless slobs, and if your boss is not inclined to insist they chip in and repay you for your missing or broken items, you may be forced to be more proactive. You could keep your stuff locked in a case of some sort, or even in the trunk of your car if it’s not in use- if they can’t find it they can’t borrow it. Sounds like they don’t respect you at all so a new job may be in order.

It sounds like they are taking advantage of you. The only thing is you should be responsible for getting you own clients. You should do everything possible not your boss. But as far as people borrowing your stuff and breaking it that is not cool. It almost seems they are doing it on purpose. Chipping scissors means they of had to drop them maybe even on purpose. I would start looking for another salon you can go to. Your coworkers might be great people but they could be mad at you for becoming manager so quickly. Talk to your manager though be for jumping to any rational decisions.
